Direct the day-to-day operations and activities of the nursery department, with the goal of creating an
atmosphere of teamwork, excellent customer relations, and maximum sales and profits while embodying our values to care, grow and deliver. Create a positive work environment for the growth and success of employees and the company that focuses on teamwork. Develop, supervise, and maintain a professional team of employees, trained in the correct procedures of outstanding customer service, product sales and inventory maintenance. Create and maintain a neat, clean, and well-organized shopping environment for our customers and staff.
- Merchandising, Inventory and Plant Maintenance
Layout: Organize, facilitate, and maintain seasonal changes in the nursery and maintain a well-organized nursery for inventory management and customer service. Receiving: In coordination with the receiving department, oversee all truck deliveries, unloading, labeling, and quality control of all nursery deliveries. Pricing: Work with Nursery Buyer to maintain pricing policies for all department products. Signage/Labeling: Coordinate sign program for department, including but not limited to: database management (labels, barcodes, etc.), individual plant signs, banners, and promotional signage. Merchandising: Direct the merchandising needs of department products to achieve sales results based on sales goals. Maintenance: Coordinate plant maintenance program, including, but not limited to: watering needs, pruning, fertilization, weed control, and pest management. Quality Control: Ensure that all plants and products meet or exceed quality standards. Inventory Control: Assist Nursery Buyer with purchasing decisions to maintain correct inventory mix and levels according to goals for department. In the absence of, or under the direction of, the nursery buyer place orders with existing vendors to maintain correct inventory mix and levels according to goals for department.
- Customer Service
In partnership with Asst. Store Manager, develop and maintain a customer service program designed to increase sales, nurture customer relations, and set our company apart from all other retailers in the market. Respond to customer service issues as the final representative of the Department when needed
- Facility Management
Maintain nursery and retail surroundings in a clean, orderly, and safe manner. Understanding and management of all physical nursery assets, including paths, gravel, trees lines, irrigation, carts, and all peripheral areas including holding and “behind the fence”.
- Safety and Security
Be aware of issues related to the health and safety of our customers and staff and take action to improve any problems.
- Personnel Management
Employee Development: Professionally motivate, challenge, and develop recognition programs (coordinated with Human Resources) for individuals and teams to maximize sales, productivity and profit. Personnel Needs: Communicate with General Manager about staffing needs and team schedule to facilitate all operational needs and customer service program. Sales and Service: In partnership with Asst. Store Manager, direct sales training in the areas of customer service, product knowledge, added value selling and company standards. Coordinate and monitor daily activities of all department employees. Establish and maintain safety and security measures for the benefit of customers and staff.
Success in the Garden Center Nursery Operations Manager position is measured by fulfilling the Core Values of B.B. Barns in a day-to-day role. Fostering teamwork and communication with all the Nursery Sales & Support staff and with the Nursery Buyer is the most critical aspect. All customer service and operations of the nursery will be fulfilled only if the teamwork and communication is at an optimum. When the team is working in a cohesive and concerted effort to help customers, maintain and manage the inventory, and overall operations, the financial goals of the nursery will come as an output from these actions. Daily check-ins with all team members are critical. Directing workflow, training in procedures and inventory, and to keep a pulse on morale are done in face-to-face, one on one interactions daily with each individual nursery team member.Maintaining the highest level of trust and integrity with all team members, vendors, and customers is vital to the continued success of B.B. Barns. Only with open and honest communication can this be maintained. Clear and open avenues of communication must be maintained.
