Planting Instructions for Trees & Shrubs

Have you recently purchased a tree or shrub from your local B.B. Barns Garden Center? GREAT! Here is a guide to help get that plant off to its best start in your yard.

  1. Dig hole – The hole should be 2-3 times the width of the root ball. The depth should be shallower than the height of the root ball.
  2. Remove from container – With small pots, place your hand on top of the root ball and turn the pot upside down, squeeze sides of the pot to release the plant. With larger pots, cut them off of the root ball with pruners or a knife. With ball & burlap material, turn the container on its side and pull out by the strings trying not to disturb the root ball. DO NOT PULL THE PLANT OUT OF THE POT BY THE FOLIAGE OR FLOWERS!
  3. Loosen roots – Any roots circling the pot need to be loosened by hand, or if the plant is becoming root-bound use a garden knife or pruners to pull the roots apart. Do not loosen the root ball of ball & burlap material! WATER UPTAKE AND GROWTH ARE GREATLY IMPEDED BY SKIPPING THIS STEP.
  4. Place plant in holeThe plant should rest on undisturbed or compacted soil. The top of the root ball should be 1-2 inches above the existing soil level (the Rhododendron family of plants are the exception; plant these even higher.) With ball & burlap material, now is the time to untie the burlap and fold back into the hole. It is not necessary to completely remove the burlap; damage to the root ball can occur.
  5. Amend Soil – Use a combination of soil amendments (we recommend Bio-tone, Daddy Pete’s Lawn & Garden Soil, & Permatil) to improve the fertility, drainage, and moisture retention of your native soil. The combination of elements will depend on your soil properties. The amendments should be mixed thoroughly to make a homogenous, amended soil. Ask a B.B. Barns associate if you need assistance determining your needs. B.B. Barns also recommends the use of Bio-tone Starter Fertilizer.
  6. Backfill – Fill in all open areas around the new plant, compacting the soil as you go. It is necessary to remove all air pockets in the amended soil. DO NOT LEAVE ANY ROOTS ON THE SIDES OF THE ROOTBALL EXPOSED. DO NOT PUT ANY SOIL ON TOP OF THE ROOTBALL. With ball & burlap material, make sure no burlap is exposed to the air.
  7. Mulch – Cover the entire planting area with mulch. DO NOT PLACE MULCH ON THE TRUNK/STEM OF THE PLANT.
  8. WATER, WATER, WATER – WITH YOUR NEW PLANTING, IT IS NECESSARY TO MONITOR THE PLANT FOR ONE YEAR, AND GIVE SUPPLEMENTAL WATER AS NEEDED, FOR ONE YEAR. Talk with your B.B. Barns team member about specific watering instructions for the plants you’ve purchased!RAINFALL IS NOT ENOUGH TO ESTABLISH NEW PLANTING
